Exploring Switzerland’s
Valais Region

The Heart of Valais

Switzerland’s Valais region offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, especially in August, when warm, pleasant weather prevails. Last summer, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure, starting with a flight to Zurich and then a scenic train journey to Brig.

Brig, located in the Upper Rhone Valley, is steeped in history and natural beauty. Nestled at the base of the Simplon Pass, this town has long served as a key transit point for travelers heading towards Italy or deeper into Switzerland.

It is home to the Stockalper Palace, a 17th-century baroque landmark built by the merchant Kaspar Stockalper. This impressive building, with its grand halls and peaceful gardens, is a must-see for any visitor.

The Zermatt Adventure

From Brig, I made my way to Zermatt, a picturesque, car-free village that’s famous for its close proximity to the iconic Matterhorn. The journey to Zermatt by train took just over an hour and offered spectacular views of the Valais countryside. Once in Zermatt, I boarded the Gornergrat Railway, which climbs to over 3,000 meters, providing stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks and the Gorner Glacier.

The experience at the summit of Gornergrat was surreal, with panoramic views of over 29 peaks towering above 4,000 meters. The famous Riffelsee lake, where the Matterhorn reflects perfectly on calm days, was a serene spot for a break.
